Long-term variability of the Abra alba community in the southern bight of the North Sea ArchiMer
Carpenter, P; Dewarumez, Jm; Lepretre, A.
The Abra alba community from the Gravelines area has been studied since 1976. During this period, sudden and unpredictable variations of the species composition have been observed. These important changes affect a limited number of species without changing the bionomical structure of the community. The species in question are found to be characteristic of this community, and are the more abundant ones. Multivariate statistical methods were used to study quantitative data on the benthic population collected from 1978 to 1992. This analysis was performed in association with air temperature data. Results showed the existence of a six- or seven-year cycle, and this is confirmed by the observation of two complete periods. This cycle, which is found to be...

Long-term water quality in the lower Seine: Lessons learned over 4 decades of monitoring ArchiMer
Romero, Estela; Le Gendre, Romain; Garnier, Josette; Billen, Gilles; Fisson, Cedric; Silvestre, Marie; Riou, Philippe.
The Seine River is a highly artificialised catchment in Europe, comprising both productive agricultural areas and intense industrial and commercial activity. Due to its strategic importance, monitoring programs in the river started as early as the 1970s. The present study compiles and analyses this valuable data set (1970–2014), thoroughly describing the riverine section downstream of Paris and the estuary. We identify long-term trends and shifting patterns in nutrients and oxygen, and pay special attention to the river’s evolution after the year 2000, when the European Water Framework Directive came into force. The study has a manifest management perspective, and the results are discussed on the basis of the environmental quality standards proposed in...

Sea state trends and variability: consistency between models, altimeters, buoys, and seismic data (1979‐2016) ArchiMer
Stopa, Justin; Ardhuin, Fabrice; Stutzmann, Eleonore; Lecocq, Thomas.
Wave hindcasts of long time series (> 30 years) have been instrumental in understanding the wave climate. However it is still difficult to have a consistent reanalysis suitable for study of trends and inter‐annual variability. Here we explore the consistency of a wave hindcast with independent observations from moored buoys, satellite altimeters, and seismic data. We use the Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) winds to drive a wave model since extreme events are generally well captured. Unfortunately the original CFSR winds are not homogeneous in time. We systematically modify this wind field in time and space to produce a wave field that has homogeneous differences against the Globwave/SeaStateCCI altimeter wave height database. These corrections...
